Our first sidetrip was to Red Cliffs Lodge. It's about half hour east of Moab, all by itself set on the Colorado River between the red cliffs. It's got it all, cabins, restaurant, movie museum and every adventure tour needed all in one place.
We came for the museum in particular.
(this I did not write, good old cut-&-paste ).......In the late 1940s, the legendary John Ford discovered the rugged beauty of Moab’s Canyonlands and filmed the first of many movies here. The first major motion pictures filmed in the Moab area were set on Red Cliffs Ranch. Wagon Master, Rio Grande, Son of Cochise, Warlock, The Commancheros, Cheyenne Autumn and many others used the ranch and its magnificent scenery as a backdrop. John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, Ben Johnson, Rock Hudson, Henry Fonda, Anthony Quinn, Lee Marvin, Richard Widmark, James Stewart and Richard Boone have all worked on location here at Red Cliffs Ranch.
More recently, Geronimo, City Slickers and Thelma and Louise - along with other movies and more than 100 commercials - have all used the Moab area as a location.
They had a film playing which gave you all the local history of films in this area...
This was actually the stunt dummy used in the cliff scene of Thelma & Louise.
We could have spent more time in there but we had a time limit as daycare pickup is 5:00, so back out to enjoy the scenery before heading out.
And a Lu update from the Daycare...her favourite place to watch the day go by...
Stopped at Deadhorse State Park...( again not me but cut & paste) .....The legend of Dead Horse Point originates around the turn of the 19th century when cowboys would round up the wild mustangs that roamed the mesa. It is said, a herd was driven down the neck of the peninsula, its sheer cliffs forming a natural corral, and the 30-foot-wide entrance was fenced off with branches and brush. For reasons unknown, the herd was left or forgotten. After a period of time with no food or water, they succumbed to the harsh desert elements, with the Colorado River in view 2,000 feet below. It is rumored those horses can be seen and heard still roaming the area.
Also many movies were filmed here....
Westworld (2016–2022) ...
Mission: Impossible (1996) ...
Mission: Impossible II (2000) ...
Thelma & Louise (1991) ...
Joe Dirt (2001) ...
The Lone Ranger (2013) ...
Gold of the Seven Saints (1961) ...
Fort Apache (1948)
The blue areas that look like water are actually potash drying fields!
Canyonlands National Park is the final park in Utah's Mighty Five
And I never ever get close to the edge.....I'm a chicken!
Canyonlands is so big it's actually in 4 districts, Island in the Sky (where we are), the Needles, the Maze and the Rivers. It's hard to do more than one on a trip unless you are staying at least a week or more. They are all so different.....always a reason to come back again one day....
